Open Question: Planning Permission, Struggling with the local council.?We're trying to change our garage to a studio, it's been a nearly a year since we first put in our plans, it was refused without any chance of us righting any problems they had with original plans. so we then did the alterations they cited, we sent various emails to the planning dept with no replies. we then had problems with the some other thing which we righted above and beyond requirements, We've now been told there's something else wrong. We have a suspicion that one of the neighbours has spoken to another councillor (who lives a few doors away.... and that councillor has spoken to the one whose dealing with our plans if you get my drift) Although we can't accuse them of this because then they'd probably refuse it any way. Their is a tree quite close to our garden boundary which we were told by one council guy wouldn't be a problem but they still keep bringing this up but we personally don't think this will be a problem. We do strongly feel that we're just been strung along because of this councillor in cahoots with our neighbour. Does anybody have any helpful suggestions....
Open Question: If during a remodel a hallwall corner that was not to code remains not to code is that ok?In my remodel a corner turn from a hallway into a living room did not give 36 inches of clearance. We are opening the space up but the area is still not a full 36 inches. Is this still allowed because of some grandfather clause or because we are remodeling the new space must provide 36 inches of clearance? He wants a metal set because he swears they are the best and most durable and all you have to do to take care of them is repaint them. I think that rust would be an issue, and really wouldn't look forward to removing any rust before repainting. Plus, I don't really like the look of most metal sets... and the ones I do like are very expensive. I really like the look of the natural wooden sets, but don't know much about taking care of them. The wooden sets usually tout that they only need to be oiled occasionally to keep it looking nice. Any care tips or tales of personal experience would be helpful. THANK YOU Open Question: Painting over old damp?I am moving in to a house in a few days and want to paint. It has been empty for about 4 months with no heating on at all in this time. There is wallpaper on the walls. There is a HUGE damp patch on one of the walls (which has been treated a while ago!) which is still only slightly damp (obviously because its been so cold and not been able to dry properly!) The heating will be turned on tomorrow and I plan on leaving it till Thursday before painting it so it has time to dry. I am wondering how do i go about painting this wall? How long should I wait before painting it? Do I need to bleach it first? Do I need to strip the wallpaper? Thanks!
