Open Question: Should I add air returns? Tips and suggestions?

My house is about 1400 sf (ranch) built in the 1950s. There is one one air return in the entire house and I would like to add some returns for a couple reasons. 1- The furnace (and a/c blower) is in the hallway along with a bathroom and my 3 bedrooms. If I keep all bedrooms open then the temperatures stay pretty equal. If I close doors then two of the rooms get quite chilly and one gets hot in the winter. So i'm hoping returns would help equal that out. Also the hallway is in the front of the house and there's a 400 sf addition on the back of the house so I'd like to get some draw from back there too. 2- We have our main family room and tv in the front room down the hall from the return, which means when it cycles on you have to double the tv volume. I'm thinking that adding more returns could also help minimize the draw and noise from the single return as it is now. So I'd probably have 4 returns added (one in each bedroom and one by kitchen and back room). Thoughts and tips and good links for research would be great. 10pts for best answer!

Open Question: How can I find out how many gallons my toilet uses per flush?

I am trying to convince my dad to install more efficient toilets, but he's not convinced that ours is worth replacing! Everything I can find says that pre-1994 toilets use around 3.5 gallons per flush, but he thinks ours uses less than that (it's an Eljer, but I don't know anything else about it). Is there a way to look up pre-1994 Eljer toilets or is there a way to measure the one that we have?

Open Question: Doing a kitchen remodel- can you help me with appliance brands?

I'm trying to get a better idea of GE vs. Maytag vs. Whirlpool vs. Frigidaire --- am getting very mixed reviews!!! I've heard the quality of Maytag (and, consequently, Whirlpool) has declined, so right now, GE and Frigidaire are at the top of the list. But-- some relatives have had bad luck with GE, and Frigidaire seems to get bad reviews at Lowes, so--- now I'm REALLY confused! I'd appreciate any advice - Thanks in advance!!!
