Open Question: Why are patio cushions so ugly?

I work at a big home improvement store and noticed how ugly all the patio cushions are. It's not just the color. The patterns, too, were often unimaginative strips or odd and tacky. No solids anywhere! It's like the same guy that designed plaid pants also had a go at patio furniture. And it's ALL the cushions - and like, there's a large variety of ugly. They did not just settle for one or two. What gives?
