Open Question: Should I use a primer to repaint interior walls and trim that are painted different colors?

So, I just bought a house that needs to be cleaned and repainted top to bottom. The living room is painted a sage green and eggshell, and the master bedroom is a muddy brown. The trim is all white, but it is filthy, so it will need to be repainted, as well. I do not know what kind of paint was used (acrylic or oil). I am planning on cleaning the trim and all the walls with warm water and soap, and painting the entire house a more neutral tan color and the trim an off-white color, but I want all the walls to be close to the same color. I do not want various shades. Do I need to use a primer for these darker colored rooms so that I get the truest shade of the tan I want and so that it will match the other walls painted lighter colors? Do I need to use a primer on the trim? I am a novice at repainting techniques and the steps to complete a repainting job, so any advice would be great.
