Open Question: Has anyone painted their formica countertops with success? How long has the new finish lasted?

I'm seeing on various message boards that this is indeed possible with the proper materials and prep work. I'm looking for anyone who has done this and how long has the new finish lasted so far. I would be happy to have it last about 5 years as by then I will either be selling the house or should be able to afford replacing them. There is a website that sells a how-to video on this process and I am wondering if it would be worth buying.

Open Question: Insulating exterior metal studded wall - huge dilemma?

I have been all over the internet the past week and haven't been able to find any specific recommendations for my unique problem. I live in a townhouse complex on the end unit. Last summer I replaced the window in the front room of the unit due to excessive condensation and runoff especially in the winter. I discovered mold growing in the interior corners of my two exterior walls in the same room. I also experienced "striping" of my wall on the interior and mold growth on each stud. Needless to say I know where every stud is because I can physically see it from the bleed through on the paint. So, I decided to gut the room when the drywall began to crumble in the corners. I discovered a small amount of mold on the insulation and the plastic vapor barrier on the exterior walls as well on each stud. The studding is metal C shaped 2X4s. I understand the majority of the mold developed when the condensation run-off from the window made its way through the wall and into the corner of the room. I can follow the rust on the metal studs. I also have uncovered from research that the metal studs are extremely poor insulators when compared with their wooden counterparts. If it was up to me I would rip the wall out and build a new one, but I cannot change the exterior due to association concerns. The siding on the unit is T-111 on the exterior which is screwed directly to the metal studs. In an ideal situation I would try to at least pull it off and underlay it with insulation board, but I cannot do that, once again, because of the association. I also have uncovered that the metal studs actually have a negative effect on the thermal envelope, perhaps decreasing it as much as 40%. Icynene and poly spray-ons are too expensive and the room is already costing me too much especially since I won't be living here for a long period. I was going to cut some rigid insulation board with an R of about 3 and adhere it to the underside of the T-111 between each stud and then cap the studs with a thin strip of the same board. Another problem is finding a 24in. insulation to fit the 2X4s. Also, I was looking into an R-19 to do the task, it expands to about 6 or so inches, when I only have 31/2in. without the board insulation. The other Idea I had was to cram the R-19 in and put the entire sheet of insulation board up on the inside of the wall. My concern with that is enough breathing room. I believe I have solved the mold issue and plan on treating it furthermore, but I need some advice on what to do to insulate the external walls. I don't want to do this to have the wall stripe next winter. I live in PA on a ridge top that gets brutalized in the winter. Also, my two boys sleep in the room and one has severe allergies, which began this project with simply replacing the carpet with a laminate floor. I plan on doing this myself to cut cost and am fairly competent when it comes to construction and electrical. Please, if anybody has any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Open Question: Why oh why can't I find the studs in my wall!!?

I have an electronic stud finder... It doesn't work properly even though I follow the directions to the letter. If I go over the same wall 5 different times I get 5 different readings. So, I finally gave up and tried the poor man's way- I: A) taped on the wall with the rubber handle end of a hammer... I can hear a different when I get to each corner of the wall, but in between I just can't hear any difference at all. B) I tried measuring 16 inches away from each corner... That didn't work either, so then I tried going 16 inches from the light switch- NADA. I get nothing but plaster at the end of my 4" screws (I'm hanging up something that weighs 53 lbs, so ofcoarse studs are very important. My wall has so many holes in it now. I've never had such trouble looking for a stud. Is it possible this wall has horizontal studs or something weird like that? I'm at a loss now. My wall is soon going to look like swiss cheese. P.S. There are also no electrical outlets on the wall so I can't use that trick either.
