Open Question: How expensive to redo a drop ceiling with dry wall etc…?

Currently have a drop ceiling in my cape style house on the second floor. I am possibly looking to getting that ripped out and putting something cheap and easy up, but I really have no idea if its even dry wall that goes up their. The square footage of my house of 1700, and it basically a double Decker of similar size with around 7.5 foot ceilings.

Open Question: How to add groove on piece of wood to use as a chalk board shelf.?

I am painting on a chalk board in my daughter's room and I was going to buy a thick piece of wood to use as a shelf. Any ideas on how to make a nice groove on top for the chalk? Any type of tool for that?

Open Question: Can wood conditioner be applied to surface again after I have already applied 2 coats of stain?

I have applied 2 coats of stain to "conditioned" wood (new wood). It has dried quite blotchy. 1st. coat I used a rag, 2nd. one I used a sponge brush. I did not wipe off the access after 2nd. coat, because I want it very dark. Now it is blotchy. What do I do to make it uniform? It still is not as dark as I want it. Should I apply another coat of conditioner before adding the 3rd. coat? Should I apply new stain then wipe off good? Should I reapply both? Help!
