Open Question: Should I sue my home improvement contractor or report him to the police?

I paid a contractor $29,000 for home improvement renovations and repairs, including painting my house, dry walling, putting new steps on the property and many more improvements and repairs. He left without completing the project. I estimate that he owes me about $9,000 in unfinished work. He dug out the patio, left a big hole, and walked away. He did not replace glass in doors and windows, and failed to do many other things. I have a written contract. I don't think he has an official contracting business, but the partial work that he did was excellent. He felt he underestimated the cost of the work. I noticed that he was delinquent in paying his property taxes and the timing was such that it appears that he used my money to pay his taxes because records indicate that they were paid. Retaining a lawyer will cost me $5000 with no promises that I will retrieve my money. I know that this was not his main job. Should I spend this kind of money on an attorney or do you have other ideas. This happened three years ago, so I know the contractor does not intend to complete the job. Should this be a police matter or an attorney matter. This may also be considered contractor fraud. I might be spending additional money on an attorney and getting nothing for it. What should I do? What steps should I take?

Open Question: Tips on Redoing My Room (TEEN GUY)?

Ok so let me start off by putting you in the situation I am in. I'm 14 turning 15 soon (freshmen) and I have been trying to redo my room for the past 2 or 3 years. But I just started asking my parents so I kept asking about once a moth or so. Eventually just a couple of days ago my parents said that they would help redo my room in April the only problem is that I need a "idea". During the couple of years that I have been wanting a new room design I have had many ideas. Such as a baseball theme, sports theme, and most recently just a "traditonal" theme. QUESTION 1 - What kind of theme should I have (hobbies are: guitar, sports, baseball) I drifted away from the sports theme cuz I think it is to "little kidish Just to give you an idea of what the shape of my room is. It is a basic squaremy door is almost directly in the middle of the rrom on the bottom of the square. but on the right side of the square there is a little indent that goes out further. I do not know the deminsions or anything for my room.Currently my room is like this. Picture the square on the left side of the room and up against the back (top of square) wall is where my bed is, I have two night stands one on each side of my bed. Across the way, from my bed (on bottom left of square) I have a short (in height) dresser with a TV on it. On the bottom right of the rrom (squarE) I have a small book case where currently I am keeping my trophies. In the indent in the square where the room goes out further I have my desk it has like a book case that is attached to it (just the design). In the top right corner of my room i have my second dresser it is big (in height). QUESTION 2. How should I rearrange my furniture Just a little more info I plan on painting my room like a dark blue or maybe a black. Really just to get like a traditional kind of feeling. I plan on getting like small organization containers mainly because I can't keep my room clean unless I have a place to put my stuff. QUESTION 3. What kind of furniture should I add to my room to fit my theme and to keep my room cool and organized. FINAL. Please answer all questions and if you can try to be as specific as possible thanks.

Open Question: How do you hang things on brick walls and stone fireplaces?

I have a stone fireplace in my room and would really like to hang a canvas up on it, but I'm concerned about putting nail holes into the grout (or whatever that thing is called that is in between the stones) and how I'd repair it if I made a mistake. I'd also like to put some art up on an exposed brick wall in a guest room. How can I safely hang things on these surfaces?

Open Question: Black and White Color Scheme for Bedroom?

White, black and gray are my favorite colors, and I would love to have a bedroom with this color scheme. But the question is "what color walls/carpet/curtains do I want?". As in, should the carpet be gray and the walls white with black pillows, et cetera, or should it be different? I'm not sure, and a second opinion would be very helpful. Thank you~!

Open Question: Should I paint oak cabinets white?

I'm redoing my house with the intention of selling it. The entire rest of the house is designed with the latest trends, but the kitchen was remodeled in the mid 80's and has those honey colored oak cabinets. I'm replacing the counters with something very current, but the honey oak look hasn't been trendy for a very long time. If I paint them white, the kitchen will look like a modern kitchen. But I'm worried that maybe buyers will like the wood look more than the white look. What do you think? Home design magazines rarely have the oak cabinets anymore, but a lot have white. Do you like oak cabinets? What about white? These aren't my cabinets, but this is kind of what they look like, only a bit more weathered. It doesn't matter if i personally like them or how functional they are, just how they look to a potential buyer. I've never stained anything, that scares me a bit. It sounds so hard! Thanks for the tip on the mineral spirits and linseed oil!

Open Question: Is there room for a new kitchen gadget?

Hi everybody! I'm a college student in the process of creating a new kitchen gadget. It's a home beverage dispenser that pours juice, soda, purified water, sports drinks, iced tea, lemonade, and basically any cold drink you can think of. I think people will like it, but I'd love to hear some feedback. Here's the survey that I built: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDVwcnZHMTlyNXBxX1FPenFwcXFLbWc6MA Please tell me what you think in the comments section. Thanks!
