Open Question: Paints safe for decorating hand prints on a flower pot?

I want to put my children's hand prints on a flower pot for Grandma. I read I'm supposed to seal it first with an oil based polyurethane (also wondering if it can be planted in then), then paint, then seal with a water based sealant. I'm just wondering what paints I can use to decorate (my children will be putting it on their hands for hand prints) that will be safe and won't wash away.
