Open Question: Where should I start for information about painting a room?

Hi, I want to paint my apartment but don't really know where a good place to start for information? (I need information about the prep work before paint a wall too) I have not a single clue about painting but I've looked at a few websites. I'm going to need information on fix screw holes as well. Thanks

Open Question: Redecorating tip for my kitchen area please?

It is a relatively small white kitchen with blackish surface. It has a window towards the back garden. Attached to the kitchen area is a little area with a table and a cupboard and we have our budgies there too and there is a huge window with door leading into the back garden. We do not sit in this area, but I have my sons school bag there, and everybody dumps everything in this area. On the wall of this extra room is a HUGE photo of a forest with waterfall. It is pretty dark, but looks lovely and occupies the whole wall. The rest of the walls in the little room are whitish-yellow and there are light green curtains. In the kitchen I painted the walls a warm red and the curtains are many colored. It looks all not very orderly, whereas the rest of the house looks harmonious, the kitchen is always a bit of a disaster area, although I clean it up once a day. I need some colour advice so that the room (kitchen with attached little room) looks more united. The obvious would be to paint the red walls whitish yellow, but it gives such a nice warm feeling the red, especially on cold winter mornings. Do you have some ideas? Thanks a lot in advance.

Open Question: Fill in the gap between two cabinets?

I moved in to a new apartment. There is a door size gap between the living room and foyer/entrance. I put the book shelf facing the living room and a smaller closed shoe cabinet facing the entrance so that the gap cannot be seen. Now, when you enter, you can see partial backside of the bookshelf above the shoe closet. What can I put up there to fill in the gap? The gap is 2.5 by 3 ft.
