Open Question: Designer help! What do you think of my living room?

I am moving to new york soon and I want a really cute contemporary place! Here are my plans so far: http://www.zgallerie.com/popup.aspx?src=images/PRODUCT/large/010363177.jpg http://www.zgallerie.com/popup.aspx?src=images/PRODUCT/large/010933216.jpg http://www.zgallerie.com/popup.aspx?src=images/PRODUCT/large/010291155.jpg A black lacquer glossy coffee table (can't find one yet) A large zebra rug with two small zebra beaded pillows http://www.pier1.com/Catalog/RugsPillowsWindows/tabid/514/List/0/CategoryID/144/level/a/ProductID/5664/ProductName/Beaded-Zebra-Pillow-/Default.aspx 5'8'' Zebra rug http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-tufted-Zebra-Wave-Wool-Rug-6-x-9/3862933/product.html What should I use as an accent color or accent pieces? I think just blue and zebra stuff might not be enough. Any suggestions? I also have mirrored end tables I might use from Pier 1. http://www.pier1.com/Catalog/Furniture/tabid/519/List/0/CategoryID/154/level/a/ProductID/129/ProductName/Hayworth-Nightstand/Default.aspx They also have a large square mirrored coffee table too. Do you like the black glossy coffee table or the mirrored one with this look???

Open Question: Is it okay to have dining room wall red and family room wall teal? Or do they need to be same color?

When you walk into my home there is one large room which is the formal dining room/living room combo. From there it leads you to the family room (large and open with 25 ft ceiling). I would like to paint an accent wall in red in the dining room/living room combo, so the overall decor will be red. In the family room, I would like to paint an accent wall teal and the overall decor will be teal and brown. Just wonder what interior designers think about this. Should the common areas (dining room/family room/living room/kitchen) have the same overall design color?

Open Question: What colors go well with brick?

Hubby and I just can not agree with what color to paint our living room.. at first I was going to do a dark navy/royal blue as an accent wall to the fireplace and then the other 3 walls in the living room a beige color.. but after long fights and a lil research I have learned this isn't the best idea (mostly I thought it was a cool idea because the fireplace is brick mantle is white and with a blue wall it would be like red white and blue I also did it on a paint web site and I thought it looked great but no one else agrees) SO what color should I do in my living room? I don't normally like dark colors and I'm normally more of a neutral person Here is a picture of the wall.. excuse the mess we just moved in a week ago! http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j34/Kindra07/DSCI1119.jpg

Open Question: Granite vs stone vs other types of kitchen counters?

My husband and I are about to contract out a major home remodel which includes adding a new kitchen. We are leaning towards either granite or natural stone counter tops but our designer / contractor is strongly steering us away from either of these options. His main criticisms are that they need sealing every year and that staining is a big issue (and other wear problems). We have talked to many homeowners with these type of counter tops and have not received any bad comments about granite / stone tops. We are wondering if we are receiving a strong personal bias from him rather than an objective presentation of our options. So we would appreciate any pros or cons for these types of kitchen counters and any other suggestions for tops if possible- to find out what they are like to use in the real world. We are remodeling the house into a log cabin style and wish to stay with as natural materials as possible. Resources for any on-line educational tools is also appreciated - if you can steer us towards any useful ones. Thanks

Open Question: Handy men/women help me out with these home projects?

My husband and I just bought our 1st house, and while we got a heck of a deal, it was foreclosed on so there are LOTS of little things that need doing and I'd like advice on the best way to go about them. 1. The bathroom floor tiles are AWFUL! I have scrubbed between them with bleach and a grout brush and that's good for now, but eventually they will need replacing. The 1 thing that bugs me about them in the meantime is that there is a spot on the white tile that looks like poop (LITERALLY) was SMEARED on it. I can't wipe it off because it appears to be concrete -- anything I can do to get this up? 2. The stairs. Someone had the bright idea that they would paint the stairs a goldish-yellow instead of leaving them natural wood. It's horribly ugly, and the stairs looks SO DIRTY no matter how many times I wash them. Our entire house is beautiful hard wood, but I'm not sure if the stairs are a high quality wood or not. Should I just take the paint up and see, or is there a better way to go about this? I hate the stairs the way they are -- should I just paint them a different color, or remove the paint? Thanks!
