Open Question: Walmart vs Target furniture?

I'm going off to college soon and will be staying in the same apartment throughout my 4 years there. I am looking for the best place to purchase affordable but DURABLE furniture. I have bought a desk from Walmart years ago, and the wood scratched easily, and was a piece of crap pretty much. Was looking online at their beds and couches, and was wondering if they are good? Or if Target's furniture was more high quality? Or what place sells nice furniture that will last me? Haha. Any advice/suggestions appreciated!

Open Question: Design ideas for family room?

Here is the furniture we own: http://www6.rentacenter.com/Detail/Ashley-315019488.html we have this couch and love seat http://www.walmart.com/catalog/detail.gsp?image=http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/04/26/66/61/0004266661092_500X500.jpg&product_id=11030594&iIndex=1&isVariant=false&corpCard=false&type=-9223372036854775808 this entertainment stand http://walmart.scene7.com/walmart/flash_zoom.jsp?company=WalMart&sku=13044846&config=WalMart/zoom_config&default=0004266613349&title=Sauder%20Beginnings%205%20Shelf%20Bookcase%44%20Cinnamon%20Cherry&categoryid=4044 this book case and two three-shelf ones as well WE want to actually DECORATE and come up with a theme or scheme I guess that will work well with these furniture pieces, which I feel are modern yet not outrageous- a good mix between modern and traditional. My fiance doesnt like anything too bright but I do not want anything else dark, as I feel that our furniture is already dark for the small space we have. Anyone out there have a reasonably priced site I can go to, or some links for some wall pieces, window treatments, etc, that will work nice with our furniture? I am out of ideas of places to look, and just really want our home to look nice and not so plain any longer! Thank you! We currently have two end tables matching the bookcases and entertainment stand... No coffee table set up now as my daughter was constantly hitting her head on it (she is one) and we now like the open floor space for her to play. We have cream carpet in the room. I have older lamps I would like to replace as well and honestly nothing other than family portraits for decorations! When we moved in together, all of my stuff was "too girly and flowery" to my fiance and he was used to no decor so after three years together, we are JUST NOW getting to really trying to decorate. I love the idea of making things look like HGTV, but can not seem to pull it off on my own! Thanks if you need more details, let me know!

Open Question: Why are they called opium beds?

I basically just want to learn the history behind opium beds, and why we call them what we call them. My friend recently bought the most beautiful opium bed for her room and it sparked the question. I know they are originally from China but google cant seem to tell me much more... Help?
