Open Question: Advice on decorating hairine cracks?

I moved into my house 18 months ago. Most of the house had been recently re-plastered and painted magnolia. Some very noticeable long hairline cracks have appeared in one room, which is annoying, as I was not going to re-decorate for a while! Three of the walls have been effected, it seems quite random, some at the top and some at the bottom of the walls. Advice on how to treat this before re-painting? (After all, I don't like magnolia) Thank you.

Open Question: How far apart do I space my recessed lights?

Our basement will be used as general family room. It is a standard 8 foot ceiling, and we will be using 6" recessed lights, probably with a 65WBR30 bulb or something similar. The room is 23x19. I plan on spacing the cans 6' apart and about 2-3' from the walls. We will have the room divided into two circuits, north and south sides, 6 lights per side (12 total). We will be using dimmer switches so we can decrease the light level as needed. My husband thinks this a total overkill; that the room will be way too bright. I've found a lot of vague sources on the internet on spacing/layout, so random links probably won't help me unless they specifically address the spacing criteria/ratio for a 65WBR30 bulb, which I can't seem to find. Most links talk about spacing in the 5-8" range, although others say more, but they also add that "it depends on the size bulb, etc....".
