Open Question: Help! Concrete countertops.. difficult to maintain?

We are building a beautiful contemporary house, and the interior designer wants to use shiny white concrete counter tops instead of granite. We decided to do it, because granite seemed to common now. Yesterday, however, we learned that concrete counters would lose their luster after 6 months and we would probably hate them within 2 years. We are < 1 week from deciding. Thanks for helping.

Open Question: Buying a new mattress?

What kind of mattress is best? What are your opinions on memory foam ( I hear they are not airy and can get hot- I hate to be hot) or coil ?

Open Question: Do you think My Neighbor's Wife (yeah, that one) really bought organic pillows for $6 yesterday?

Are you sure, I asked. And she said, Yes, of course I'm sure. It said so right on the tag. This little talk came right after we had our early afternoon whoopee time and then let the kids out of the basement. By the way, thanks for all of your suggestions yesterday on getting her kids to stop calling me Dad. They were really helpful and I think we've nipped that little bad habit in the bud. Sorry I couldn't hand out a BA but somebody reported the Q and it got zapped. Anyway, we were having a little snuggle on the couch which I don't really mind since it keeps her coming back for more and isn't that what we all want? She says her husband never gives her that extra hug that makes a girl feel special which just tells me that he is dumber than I thought or just doesn't care. Either way, I am reaping the benefit of his neglect. So she really believed that those $6 pillows were made of all organic material and I was having some trouble with it. Really? I pressed further… you know that not everything you read on labels is true, don't you? She's, ummmm, a few years younger, if you get my drift, and still inclined to take a few too many things at face value. So, yes, she definitely thought the pillows were all organic. So I said, you know that we live right next to Brooklyn's Chinatown and that there are actual sweatshops just two blocks away where they make counterfeit designer goods for unsuspecting Midwestern tourists all day long, right? She nodded with some hesitation but seemed to still be resolute in her belief. I don't think she actually knew that those little businesses near Eighth Avenue are really sweatshops. They are and you can take my word for it. I made one last effort to get her to see the light. Amy, I said, we live in a crummy neighborhood full of dishonest and corrupt people and the stores here are all junk because no respectable store will open a business here due to the relentless shoplifting so I just don't understand why you are so sure that those pillows are all organic. Are you just an eternal optimist? She kind of smiled out the side of her face in that cute little way that she has and said, Yeah, I kind of need to believe the best about people. I thought that was just the sweetest thing in the world so I dragged her off to the bathroom for another quickie. I guess that's why she and my wife are such good friends. But I still don't think those pillows are really organic.

Open Question: stain pine skirtings to look like oak?

Im looking to replace the doors in my house to oak 2 panel or 4 panel. While doing this im also looking to change the skirting's and facings to oak but this seems a fairly expensive option. Im looking into the idea of buying unfinished pine skirtings and facings and staining / varnishing them in an oak finish. Can someone please advise if they have done this and how it looks, or can someone also advise on an alternative that is not overly expensive? Thanks in advance
