Open Question: Do I need hardiebacker for tiling my stairs?I pulled tile straight off my wood sub-floor. It seemed fine. There were a few cracked tiles, but I think this was due to uneven floors, and the peak between two plywood sheets. I tiled my (concrete slab) entryway with saltillo and talavera tiles straight onto the slab. I am about to tile my (indoor) stairs with the same. They are down to the plywood. Is it safe to tile directly onto them, or do I need hardiebacker. If so, please say why or why not.
