Open Question: What are some good colors/ things to know when painting an apartment?

I'd like to paint three walls in my apartment and possibly my bedroom. For the kitchen I was thinking a red color and for the wall in the living room I was thinking a grey-blue color. Which shades of red are better for painting over? Is it better to go with a brighter shade or a darker, deeper shade or does it matter? Which colors make a statement but are still easy to paint over cheaply? Thanks!

Open Question: Any reason why you shouldn't paint a metal lighting fixture?

My new condo has a perfectly functional ceiling-mounted lighting fixture in the kitchen that is the WRONG color for my scheme. I would prefer to paint rather than replace, as right now we have enough work to do in our new fixer-upper that I'd like to avoid extra purchases! We use CFL bulbs, so it shouldn't get that hot, right? Here's the type of fixture it is (not exactly, but to get an idea): http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20170671 If you think it's safe to paint it, what kind of paint should we use? Right now it's red enamel and I'd love it to be a muted yellow. Spray enamel?

Open Question: how to remove polyurethane that has seeped under the quarter round trim?

We are repainting in the kitchen. The hardwood floors were screened and then top coated with a matte polyurethane and some of that oozed under the quarter round trim and "reacted" with the trim paint. I removed the quarter round but now have much residue of the polyurethane and would like to remove it from the edges of the floor before I re-install the quarter round. Any ideas on the removal that would not effect the rest of the floor?

Open Question: In painting interior walls, could you use regular white paint instead of a primer?

I have to paint over a colored wall. I have used primer before, and didn't see much difference, than if I had just used a white paint base. I'm going to be painting the wall a light cream color, so its close to white anyways. Is there any reason why a primer is better than using plain white paint?

Open Question: How do I get reasonably priced white color or even white in stone look laminate or other floating flooring?

It is for a small vacation condo that we want white sound-proof flooring for; you even see in stores or, pictures of but, cannot find b/c most is produced for overseas or businesses only I suppose. Ikea has a white gloss laminate floor (Markland) but, it is not available near condo (FL) and, shipping is ridiculous! Parador has beautiful almost pure white ones but, cannot find a US distributor. Does anyone know where I could find something nice and reasonably priced?

Open Question: Needs some thoughts and ideas on converting an attic space into a Master bedroom. Have any ideas?

I've coveted this space for the last 23 years. Let me describe it to you. It is actually very big, an open floor plan that is actually 3 rooms and a full bath. Right now my son has a music room, living room and bedroom in this space. The back of our home is 3 stories high and the windows in the room face a gorgeous river view (that's what I covet) on one side, and a big beautiful Oak tree on the opposite side. I'd like my bedroom to have the river view. That side of the room gets a lot of light due to the sunrise whereas the side with the Oak tree is always shaded. I have a queen size wrought iron bed. The walls in the attic room are currently an apple green, the bathroom was built fairly recently and has a Pedestal sink and a claw-foot slipper tub. The window in the bathroom looks down over our pony and chicken barn. I want to change up the color scheme. I was thinking maybe white with reds for bedding but my bed is a washed blue: http://www.antiqueironbeds.com/wesabeds/bedfulls/1052lgcu.html so I'm not sure a red would work. Also, the hall leading up stairs has a red wall which I'd like to keep because it accents the color on the first floor nicely. If you can give some ideas on color, bedding, even window treatments I would greatly appreciate it. By the way, the flooring is hardwood stained fruitwood, you can see it here: http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/s/images/stain_wood.chart2a.jpg. Even though the ceilings are angled they are a good height and don't require bending over when near the edges of the wall. I don't currently have any pictures. My home is decorated in a sophisticated country theme (meaning no cow, chicken or other barnyard decor), think French country. The house is a 100 year old farm house, white with black shutters, red doors, very traditional. I would like the bedroom to stay in the French country style.
