Any complaints?Open Question: What is the standard angle of a stairway?I have an old house, a little more than 100 years old. The stairway consists of a ten foot drop in ten linear feet, which means the stairway is at a 45º angle. I am considering extending the stairway out into the living room in order to make the stairs easier to climb and also to reduce the risk of injuries from falling down the stairs. I can move a doorway but can only extend the stairs bout two and a half feet, which would make the angle about 39º. I can not angle the stairs either at the top or the bottom without making a new bathroom somewhere else, since the bathroom is partially under the stairs. So what is the standard height of a riser? The existing risers are 8 inches high; the steps are two inches thick and definitely too narrow. Tread width here is a bit over nine inches. I hope the existing stairway is somehow "grandfathered" in.
