Open Question: I just bought my first home, what are some tips you may have?

We just purchased our first home and we get the keys tomorrow, I'm looking for some tips of the trade that can help keep up with a home. What good home habits can we start for day 1?

Open Question: What are the regulations for fitted kitchens?

My landlord is replacing the kitchen in my flat under the ' Better Homes ' scheme. The kitchen is very small to start with measuring only 2400mm x 2040mm. In that I have a 50cm cooker, a 60cm washer and separate fridge and freezer both 50cm wide. On the wall above the sink are 3 wall units and on the opposite wall above the worktop, a double wall unit. I have 1 draw that is full sized to take a cutlery tray. The landlord is going to remove to bank of units above the sink in case I bang my head on it.( Health and Safety) They are extending the gap where the cooker is because the next tenant may have a bigger cooker and where the fridge and freezer are, they will leave a gap 20mm both sides of each appliance after extending it to 60cm in case new tenant has bigger fridge etc. All this will leave me with no cupboard space, not even a place for cutlery and gaps everywhere where food/utensils can drop. They are claiming this is new regulations. I feel it is nothing of the sort. In fitted kitchen showrooms, I have never seen such unsightly gaps. Can anyone tell me if such regulation exist or is my landlord being disingenuous?
