Open Question: Should I put a layer of 1/4" plywood under my hardwood planks?

I have a 3/4"x3" T&G subfloor that runs perpendicular to my floor joists. Since I'm running the flooring parallel to the subfloor, I'm wondering if I need to put down a layer of 1/4" plywood. I'll be using a pneumatic cleat nailer for the flooring.
